Eskom said on Sunday that it was still dealing with unplanned power outages in parts of Gauteng. There were a number of outages across the province as a result of multiple network faults, according to the power utility.
Delays in responding to reports were also exacerbated, according to the report, by a go-slow by some technicians.
“We can confirm that Eskom management met with the trade unions and the labor matters that were raised with management were resolved with the agreement that technicians will resume operations,” said Eskom’s Daphne Mokwena.
According to Mokwena, management expects everything to return to normalcy as soon as possible. “We are working to restore supply to the remaining affected areas.” However, because of the backlog, the turnaround time would be longer than usual.”
Eskom declared rolling blackouts more than a week ago.
However, the power utility suspended power outages on Friday, just days before the municipal elections, citing increased generation capacity.
On the sidelines of an election campaign in Ivory Park on Saturday, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa told journalists that the country’s power crisis will not affect the elections.
“Will it have an adverse effect on the elections?” I doubt it, because everyone understands where we are. They are angry, but they have come to understand and internalize the explanations that have been provided.”
