Nelson Chamisa attracted hundreds of applauding fans to his first political event since launching a new party weeks ago, as Zimbabwe prepares for elections postponed due to COVID-19.
Nelson Chamisa created the Citizens Coalition for Change party in January, breaking with the Movement for Democratic Change.
In 2018, he lost a contested presidential election to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the country’s Constitutional Court upheld the result.
The courts later determined Chamisa was not the genuine head of the MDC, handing control of the party to Mnangagwa’s challengers. Chamisa was no longer the MDC’s leader in parliament and could no longer use the party’s offices or receive state funds.
It doesn’t matter what they stole “Chamisa stated of the court decision.
“We’re beginning over. We begin at zero. “This is a new party,” he said amid cheers. Many wore the new party’s yellow T-shirts and hats instead of the MDC’s red.
On Mar. 26, Zimbabwe will hold parliamentary and council elections for around 130 vacant seats. A test for next year’s general election, basically.
While Chamisa’s party is new, the obstacles to opposition control in Zimbabwe remain. Included are claimed political security units that act in favor of the ruling party.
On Sunday, Chamisa accused the country’s elections administration authority of planning to rig the upcoming elections.
