Given the Ukraine crisis and its impact on oil prices, serious concerns have been raised about the availability of the nine million litres of diesel required daily by Eskom to avoid more severe power cuts.
With Eskom burning millions of liters of diesel to build up reserves in order to keep the country on stage four blackouts for the time being, there are concerns that power cuts could be increased if additional units fail.
According to the utility, if the country runs out of diesel, it may be forced to increase the power cuts by three stages.

For the time being, stage four will be renamed stage two on Friday morning, prior to its conclusion on Monday.
Jan Oberholzer, Eskom’s chief operating officer, explained what would happen if stage eight was ever required.
“After stage eight, the system operator will specify the number of megawatts that must be shed per province. When we reach stage eight, the system operator will make that determination “Oberholzer elaborated.
