A highway services head has warned that charge points for electric vehicles are’sitting there with no electricity’ due to a shortage of capacity.

The lack of power capacity for charge points is a “major problem” for the electric vehicle business, according to Ken McMeikan, chief executive of Moto Hospitality, which operates motorway service stations across the UK.

McMeikan claimed on BBC Radio 4 that charge stations at four Moto locations are “sitting there with no power,” preventing EV drivers from using them.

It will simply not be possible, he says, unless targets are set for power companies to deliver enough power for charging sites across the country.

“It’s not difficult to get the right number of chargers,” he remarked. “Getting enough power to those chargers to actually operate well enough for EV drivers is a major major problem.”

In order to encourage people to transition to electric vehicles, the government has committed to restrict the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

“There was a target set for the number of chargers that would be available at each motorway service area by the end of 2023, and that was a minimum of six,” McMeikan explained.
