The ID book, along with 69 other items that belonged to the former president, will be auctioned. This comes after the SAHRA’s attempt to classify them as heritage objects failed.

Makaziwe Mandela, daughter of Nelson Mandela, is preparing to auction her father’s identity document (ID) book along with 69 other items in February. This comes after a two-year legal battle with the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), which sought to prevent the sale by classifying the items as heritage objects.

The ID book, received by Mandela in 1993 after his release from prison, is part of the auction to fund a memorial garden dedicated to the late former president. The sale has stirred controversy due to the Heritage Act’s restrictions on removing such items from the country without a permit.
