The Constitutional Court of South Korea will deliver its verdict on whether President Yoon Suk Yeol will be permanently removed from office or reinstated on April 4, according to a statement issued by the court on Tuesday. The ruling will be announced at 11 a.m., and the session will be streamed live.
Yoon faced impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14 over accusations of breaching his constitutional duties by declaring martial law in early December without valid justification. The suspended president has denied any intention to fully impose military rule, arguing instead that his action was meant to draw attention to the opposition Democratic Party’s misuse of its parliamentary power, which he believed posed a threat to the country.
In his closing statement before the court concluded its hearings, Yoon said that his declaration of martial law was intended as a message to the public, urging them to unite against “anti-state forces,” pro-North Korea sympathizers, and the political gridlock caused by the opposition.
