Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he intends to participate in the upcoming G7 summit in Canada and expressed his hope of meeting U.S. President Donald Trump during the event.
Speaking at a press conference, Zelenskyy said he plans to raise issues such as sustained international backing for Ukraine, sanctions targeting Russia, and financial support for rebuilding efforts in Ukraine.
He emphasized that any decision on imposing stronger sanctions against Russia ultimately rests with the U.S. President. “I hope we’ll have an opportunity to speak at the summit, and if no decisions are made by then, I at least want to understand how close we are to reaching one,” Zelenskyy said.
President Trump recently stated he had not yet made a decision on proposed sanctions against Russia that are currently under Senate consideration.
During a joint briefing with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Zelenskyy acknowledged that Ukraine would struggle to replace U.S. weapons systems if American support were to end. He also noted Kyiv’s intention to deepen its cooperation with Germany in defence manufacturing.
“We need funding… Germany is one of the countries that understands this, follows through on its commitments, and acts consistently,” Zelenskiy said.
For his part, Pistorius shared that Germany’s military aid to Ukraine has totalled 7 billion euros (about $8.12 billion) so far this year, with an additional 1.9 billion euros awaiting approval from the German parliament.
