Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in Beijing on Tuesday, with both leaders pledging to deepen diplomatic cooperation, expand trade and investment, and strengthen ties between China and Central Europe at a time of shifting global economic and geopolitical conditions.
The meeting took place at the Great Hall of the People and marked one of the most significant high-level exchanges between China and Slovakia in recent years. Officials from both countries described the discussions as comprehensive, covering political relations, economic cooperation, infrastructure development, green technology, and cultural exchanges.
Focus on Economic Cooperation
During the talks, Xi emphasized China’s willingness to work with Slovakia to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, increase two-way trade, and encourage Chinese companies to invest in Slovak manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, and technology sectors.
Slovakia, a member of both the European Union and the eurozone, has become an important industrial hub in Central Europe, particularly in the automotive and advanced manufacturing industries. Chinese officials indicated that Beijing sees opportunities for deeper cooperation in electric vehicle supply chains, battery technology, and industrial modernization.
Pellegrini welcomed increased Chinese investment and highlighted Slovakia’s strategic position as a gateway to European markets. He also stressed the importance of maintaining stable economic relations between the European Union and China despite ongoing trade disputes involving electric vehicles and industrial subsidies.
Strengthening Political Dialogue
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular high-level contacts and enhancing cooperation in multilateral forums, including the United Nations and other international institutions.
Xi said China supports stronger dialogue with Central and Eastern European countries and called for cooperation based on mutual respect, openness, and shared development. He also reiterated Beijing’s support for peaceful solutions to international disputes and for maintaining stability in global supply chains.
Pellegrini emphasized Slovakia’s interest in a pragmatic and balanced foreign policy that allows for constructive engagement with major global partners while remaining committed to its European and transatlantic obligations.
Trade and Investment Outlook
According to Chinese customs data, bilateral trade between China and Slovakia has grown steadily over the past decade, driven largely by machinery, electronics, automotive components, and industrial equipment. Analysts say future growth could increasingly come from green energy technologies, digital infrastructure, and research partnerships.
The Slovak delegation reportedly included senior officials responsible for economy, transport, innovation, and foreign affairs, reflecting the strong economic focus of the visit.
Broader China–Europe Context
The Beijing meeting comes as China seeks to stabilize and improve relations with European countries amid continuing tensions over tariffs, technology restrictions, and supply chain security.
For Slovakia, the visit represents an opportunity to attract investment and diversify economic partnerships while navigating the complex relationship between the European Union and China.
While no major breakthrough agreements were announced immediately after the talks, both sides signed several cooperation documents covering economic, educational, and cultural exchanges, and agreed to continue working toward expanded commercial and investment projects.
The meeting concluded with both presidents expressing confidence that closer China–Slovakia cooperation could contribute to economic growth, regional connectivity, and broader China–Europe engagement in the years ahead.
