India’s top court is pressing for faster action on tougher food labelling, questioning why authorities need more time for fresh consultations when the issue concerns public health.
The Supreme Court has challenged the proposed timeline for introducing prominent red hexagonal warnings on packaged foods high in sugar, salt or fat, including a proposed year-long voluntary compliance period.
The intervention comes as India intensifies its wider food-safety crackdown, with authorities raiding eateries and shutting restaurants and factories over alleged hygiene violations.
Food industry groups have raised concerns about the proposed red warning symbol and the scientific basis for the thresholds, while public-health advocates have pushed for prominent warnings to help consumers identify products high in nutrients of concern.
The Supreme Court has reserved its order, with a final decision expected to shape the next phase of India’s front-of-pack food labelling regime.
