Serbia is entering a new political chapter after President Aleksandar Vučić resigned from office ahead of the country’s October 25 snap parliamentary election.
Vučić is now set to campaign for the prime minister’s post as the Serbian Progressive Party’s candidate. His resignation ends his second presidential term early and paves the way for an early presidential election, while Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić assumes the role of acting president.
The move comes after nearly two years of student-led protests that erupted following the 2024 Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which killed 16 people. The protests have included demands for accountability and action on corruption.
With Serbia now facing both a parliamentary vote and an upcoming presidential election, Vučić’s resignation marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape but not necessarily his exit from power.
