Protests in Madrid have entered a third day as demonstrators camp outside the regional administration, demanding stronger tenant protections amid a housing shortage and soaring rents.
The protests intensified after police evicted 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home of more than seven decades, removing her on a stretcher following an eviction order secured by the investment fund that bought her apartment.
Further protests are expected across Spain, while Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says the government is working on a housing decree aimed at providing immediate relief for tenants.
Rents have reportedly doubled on average over the past decade, far outpacing salary growth.
