Burkina Faso has opened its first gold refinery, marking a major step in the country’s push to retain more value from its gold industry domestically.
President Captain Ibrahim Traoré inaugurated RAFFINOR-BF at a five-hectare site in Ouagadougou’s Ouaga 2000 district. The refinery will initially process up to 164 tonnes of gold annually, with a second phase expected to raise capacity to 515 tonnes.
The facility will transform doré gold from industrial and artisanal mines into 99.9% pure fine gold bars, as Burkina Faso seeks greater control over the processing and value generated from its mineral resources.
