Home Affairs Minister Leon Schrieber says South Africa is taking a major step towards a digital identity system.
On Thursday, Schrieber demonstrated what he says is South Africa’s first working digital ID, linked to a person’s biometrics and the national population register.
The system will allow citizens to securely verify their identity using a smartphone, while controlling what personal information they share.
