Bulgaria’s political landscape enters a new chapter as incumbent President Iliana Iotova secures a decisive 57.6% of the vote in the presidential runoff, defeating pro-Western challenger Andrey Gyurov, who received 39.5%.

Iotova’s victory makes history, marking the first time a woman has been directly elected to Bulgaria’s presidency. Having assumed the role on an interim basis in January following Rumen Radev’s resignation, she is associated with the Russia-friendly political camp, setting the stage for renewed attention on Bulgaria’s geopolitical direction.
