In a stunning political upset, Democrat Allison Montgomery has defeated Republican incumbent Phillip Rigsby in Alabama’s House District 25, becoming the first transgender person elected to the state legislature.
With more than 95% of the estimated vote counted, Montgomery was leading 53% to 47%, according to the Associated Press, which called the race.
The victory is part of a wider Democratic surge in Northern Alabama, where three seats reportedly changed hands during Tuesday’s elections.
A result few would have expected in a traditionally Republican state and another headline-grabbing outcome from the 2026 Midterms.
