In a major political upset, progressive Democrat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers to win Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.
El-Sayed’s victory marks a historic first, making him the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.
During his campaign, he championed Medicare for All, called for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel and pledged to tackle the influence of money in politics. His campaign also drew fierce criticism and personal attacks from prominent Republicans, including President Donald Trump.
His election is set to bring his positions on healthcare, foreign policy and government spending into the national Senate debate.
