German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to visit Washington next week for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement from the German government. The two leaders are scheduled to meet at the White House on Thursday, marking their first face-to-face talks.

Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing key global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and international trade. Since taking office on May 6, Merz has been active on the diplomatic front, aiming to bolster Western support for Ukraine and encourage steps toward a ceasefire. Earlier this week, he welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Berlin.

Germany is also looking to ease tensions over trade between the European Union and the United States. President Trump had threatened to introduce a 50% tariff on EU imports beginning this Sunday, but the implementation has now been postponed until July 9.
