On Monday, China responded to the United States’ new 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods by imposing additional tariffs of up to 15 percent on certain American imports. This move marks the resurgence of the tariff war that initially began during the first term of U.S. President Donald Trump. The newly imposed tariffs by Beijing cover a variety of U.S. goods, including liquefied natural gas, coal, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement automobiles.

In addition to the tariffs, China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the U.S. measures and initiated an anti-monopoly investigation into Google, despite the company’s services being effectively banned in mainland China. The U.S. tariff, which went into effect on February 4, was introduced after President Trump accused China of failing to take adequate steps to stop the export of fentanyl precursors, a major contributor to the opioid crisis in the U.S. The tariff increase was intended to pressure China into addressing this issue.

As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold discussions in the near future to ease tensions and address the ongoing trade dispute. The White House indicated that a phone conversation could occur within the next few days, but the future of U.S.-China relations remains to be seen.

The intensifying trade conflict between the U.S. and China continues to escalate as both countries impose retaliatory tariffs and engage in diplomatic manoeuvres. The outcome of this trade war could have significant global economic implications, and whether negotiations between Trump and Xi can deescalate tensions will be crucial in determining the future of international trade relations.
