Eskom has announced that it wants the City of Johannesburg and City Power to repay the full debt of R3.4 billion for defaulting on their electricity account.

According to the utility, the Johannesburg High Court has ordered the metro to pay just over R1 billion of the debt, including interest.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena stated that City Power had been defaulting on payments since October.

“When the matter was heard on 4 June 2024, the total amount owed to Eskom was R3.4 billion. The city, in response to Eskom’s application, brought a counterclaim against Eskom for R3.4 billion, alleging potential overbilling and that as a result, it applied an automatic setoff against the electricity account. The court dismissed the counterclaim by the city with costs and dismissed the automatic setoff claim,” said Mokwena.
