In a major diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following a dangerous escalation of hostilities between the two nuclear-armed nations.
The announcement comes after a day of intense military exchanges. Earlier, India and Pakistan launched ballistic missiles at each other’s military installations, in what marked the most severe confrontation in decades. Pakistan claimed that India had bombarded at least three of its air bases for the fourth consecutive night. India, on the other hand, accused Pakistan of initiating hostilities and claimed its retaliatory strikes were in self-defense.
Speaking from the White House, President Trump said, “We have been in close contact with both sides. I can now confirm that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. This is a critical step in ensuring peace and preventing further bloodshed.”
India’s Foreign Secretary also confirmed the ceasefire, stating, “We have agreed to stand down. Both sides have shown restraint and a willingness to de-escalate. Diplomatic channels remain open.”
The ceasefire agreement follows days of international concern as tensions escalated to unprecedented levels, with global powers calling for restraint and dialogue.
Observers say Washington’s mediation was pivotal in halting the slide into full-scale conflict. The ceasefire now opens the door for broader negotiations on long-standing territorial disputes, particularly over Kashmir.
