Starting October 12, 2025, travelers from non-EU countries entering or leaving the European Union will now undergo a fully digital border process under the newly implemented Entry/Exit System (EES). The system is operational across 29 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. It electronically records each non-EU traveler’s personal details, entry and exit dates and locations, as well as biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints. Reports indicate that the system applies only to short-term stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area. EU citizens and residents with valid residence permits are exempt from the new procedure.
