German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has arrived in Kyiv for discussions centered on maintaining support for Ukraine as it continues to resist Russian aggression, according to an announcement by the foreign ministry on Monday.
“We remain committed to standing firmly with Ukraine so it can keep defending itself effectively — through advanced air defense systems, military aid, and humanitarian and economic support,” Wadephul said in a statement.
In response to a large-scale Russian attack on Sunday — which involved a barrage of drones along with cruise and ballistic missiles — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the United States and other Western allies to boost Ukraine’s air defence systems.
Germany stands as Ukraine’s second-largest military backer, following the United States, whose uncertain stance has raised concerns and placed increased pressure on European partners to step up their aid.
