Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Baku today for a high-level official visit at the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, marking what officials from both sides are calling a “new chapter” in Iran-Azerbaijan relations.
The one-day visit was marked by a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honor and national flags of both nations displayed prominently in the capital’s presidential square. The visit underscores renewed diplomatic momentum between Tehran and Baku, as the two neighbors seek to deepen economic and political cooperation after periods of strained ties.
Central to the discussions was the commissioning of the Agband-Kalala bridge, a major infrastructure project that both sides see as a vital trade corridor linking Iran and Azerbaijan more directly. The bridge is expected to dramatically improve the flow of goods, reduce transport costs, and serve as a symbol of cross-border economic integration.
In addition to infrastructure talks, both leaders are expected to announce plans for expanded business missions, energy collaboration, and potential security coordination along their shared border.
President Pezeshkian described the visit as “a significant step toward trust-building and long-term cooperation.” He added that Iran views Azerbaijan not only as a strategic partner but also as a cultural and historical neighbor with shared interests in regional peace and development.
President Aliyev echoed those sentiments, highlighting the potential for growth in trade, transit, and regional connectivity. “Today’s talks are about the future not just between governments, but between peoples,” he said during their joint media appearance.
The visit also comes amid shifting regional dynamics in the South Caucasus, with both countries showing interest in counterbalancing external influence and increasing local integration projects.
The outcomes of today’s meetings are expected to result in several agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at solidifying bilateral ties.
