A day after initially denying a request from Donald Trump’s legal team to allow him to speak during the closing arguments of his New York financial fraud trial, Judge Arthur Engoron changes his decision once more. As expected, Trump’s statements deviate from the judge’s guidelines, leading to a prompt interruption. These are the most recent legal developments concerning the former president’s aspirations for a 2024 White House reelection.

In the New York financial fraud trial, Judge Arthur Engoron initially allows Donald Trump to speak during closing arguments but quickly interrupts him as he deviates from the agreed-upon guidelines. Trump disregards the judge’s terms, making political statements and attacking the legal system. Trump’s lawyer, Christopher Kise, fails to control his client, leading to Engoron cutting Trump off after about five minutes. Trump holds a news conference at 40 Wall St. reiterating his claims. During the state’s closing argument, Assistant Attorney General Kevin Wallace suggests that Trump pay millions in fines and be barred from the real estate industry, along with a five-year ban for his sons, Eric and Donald Jr. The court had previously paused Engoron’s order canceling Trump’s business licenses in New York in October, awaiting a final ruling. Despite Trump’s courtroom comments, they are unlikely to sway the judge determining the penalties in his civil fraud trial.
