Malawi is heading into a crucial election, with over 7 million voters set to choose a president, 229 MPs, and 509 local councillors. The vote follows five turbulent years marked by economic struggles, fuel shortages, and public frustration.
Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera seeks a second term, facing off again with 85-year-old former president Peter Mutharika in their fourth electoral showdown. The campaign has been dominated by economic issues, especially in cities where fuel queues and rising living costs are daily challenges.
Seventeen candidates are vying for the presidency. To win outright, a candidate must secure over 50% of the vote, or a run-off will follow.
