The African National Congress (ANC) sought to reassure affiliated unions that despite losing its majority status in the May 29 polls and forming a Government of National Unity (GNU), it has not completely relinquished its grip on power.
Addressing delegates at the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU)’s National Political School in Boksburg on Monday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula acknowledged the setback but emphasized that the ANC remains in command.
“We have not been politically obliterated; we have suffered a setback,” Mbalula stated. He reassured the audience that the ANC did not yield to pressure or concede its position easily, but instead made strategic decisions in navigating the new political landscape.
