Israeli Prime Minister says security concerns forced temporary restrictions near sacred site..
Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed Israel’s support for the Christian community following concerns over the temporary closure of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre during Palm Sunday.
Speaking on the issue, Netanyahu said reactions to the closure had been overstated, explaining that the decision was made purely for security reasons after debris from Iranian missiles reportedly landed near the historic site.
According to the Israeli leader, authorities restricted visitor access to the church in order to minimize the risk of potential attacks and ensure the safety of worshippers and tourists.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel remains committed to protecting Christian holy places and maintaining the safety of Christian communities in the region.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is one of Christianity’s most sacred sites, traditionally believed to mark the location of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The site attracts thousands of pilgrims each year, especially during significant Christian observances such as Palm Sunday and Easter.
Security around major religious sites in Jerusalem is often heightened during periods of regional tension, particularly when missile threats or other security risks emerge.
Netanyahu reiterated that the Israeli government’s primary objective remains the protection of all religious communities and the preservation of access to sacred sites once security conditions allow.
