President Duma Boko Makes First Official Visit to South Africa

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Botswana’s President Duma Boko paid his first official visit to South Africa since his election in 2024. President Boko was received by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria, where the two leaders held discussions aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties between the neighboring Southern African nations.

The meeting focused on enhancing economic cooperation, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and promoting regional integration within the framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The visit marks a renewed commitment from both sides to deepen longstanding political, cultural, and economic relations.

“Botswana and South Africa share not only borders, but a deep history of partnership, solidarity, and shared aspirations. Our discussions today lay the groundwork for stronger cooperation going forward,” President Ramaphosa said during a joint media briefing.

President Boko echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of mutual development and equitable trade in achieving sustainable growth for both nations.

The leaders also touched on regional security, cross-border infrastructure development, and efforts to streamline customs and migration processes to enhance movement of people and goods.

This high-level visit is expected to lead to follow-up engagements between ministers and trade delegations from both countries in the coming months.
