Kenya experienced a significant power blackout on Sunday, potentially attributed to sabotage, as stated by a government minister. Striking around 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT), this marks the country’s third nationwide blackout in four months. The outage affected various services, including prolonged power loss at Nairobi’s main airport, impacting two terminals. The recurrence of power disruptions has stirred anger and frustration among Kenyans, prompting demands for explanations.

Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, criticized for delays in restoring power at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) during Sunday’s blackout, has called for a police investigation into the possibility of sabotage in the recurring power outages. Terming JKIA as a facility of strategic national importance, Murkomen emphasized the need for a formal inquiry due to the frequency of disruptions. In August, he had vowed to prevent a repeat of such incidents after Kenya’s longest recent nationwide power outage. Some Kenyans speculate that the outages may be a ploy to support privatizing the state-run electricity provider, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), while others attribute them to KPLC’s incompetence. Power was mostly restored by Monday noon, except in certain parts of Nairobi and the Coast region. Kenya Power continues efforts to normalize the situation. The country has experienced several national power outages in recent months, prompting growing concern and varied opinions among the public.
