Taiwan has unveiled a new passport design. It wants to better distinguish itself from mainland China.
The name Taiwan is now much larger on the cover, and “Republic of China” in English will be removed. The current cover has been in use for 17 years, but the Foreign Affairs Ministry said many Taiwanese have complained about being mistaken for Chinese citizens. The move has been approved by parliament. It’s part of the pro-independence ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s efforts to solidify Taiwan’s identity and avoid confusion with the mainland.
