South Africa has taken a significant step towards securing a place in the World Cup quarterfinals with a 49-18 victory over Tonga in Marseille. They earned a crucial bonus point, putting them at the top of Pool B with 15 points. However, their exact standing in the pool will be determined when Ireland, the world’s number one ranked team, faces Scotland, ranked fifth, in Paris. If Ireland wins, they will finish in first place, with South Africa as runners-up. However, if Scotland beats Ireland by a margin of 21 points or more, with both teams scoring four tries to earn an attacking bonus point, all three teams would finish with 15 points, and Scotland would top the group on points difference.

South Africa’s coach, Jacques Nienaber, acknowledged that the pool outcome will only be decided on Saturday. They achieved their goal of a bonus-point victory against Tonga with seven tries, including a return for Handre Pollard after a 13-month absence. One downside was a suspected fractured cheekbone for winger Makazole Mapimpi. Tonga’s coach, Toutai Kefu, praised his team’s performance and their effort to put on a good show against the defending World Cup champions, despite the loss. Tonga’s next match is against Romania on October 8, where they aim for their first victory of the World Cup.
