The Treasury Has Announced Plans to Inject Billions Into Enhancing South Africa’s Crime-fighting Endeavors as Part of the 2024 Budget.

During the budget speech for 2024 on Wednesday, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that the Treasury is set to allocate billions of rands to strengthen the country’s crime-fighting initiatives. Godongwana specified that a total of R765 billion would be allocated to the peace and security cluster.

In the upcoming financial year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced plans to train 10,000 new police recruits. He emphasized the country’s commitment to promoting regional peace and stability by allocating funds for deploying soldiers in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Godongwana noted that the budget would address the costs and requirements for these crucial missions, with ongoing assessment and funding allocation throughout the year.

Furthermore, additional funding will be directed towards combating illegal mining. A significant amount, £2.9 billion from the Criminal Asset Recovery Account, will be utilized for this purpose, targeting illegal mining and other priority crimes. Notably, 60% of this allocation will go towards police deployments, including the procurement of vehicles.
