Donald Trump was warmly welcomed at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, marking his first public appearance since surviving an assassination attempt. Sporting a white bandage on his ear, the former US president waved to a packed arena and received a standing ovation from enthusiastic supporters, just two days after the failed attack at a Pennsylvania rally.
Trump, 78, did not address the convention but stood alongside his newly announced running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, soaking in the applause and chants of “USA! USA!” He later joined Vance in a VIP box that also included House Republican Byron Donalds and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, smiling and applauding as speakers took the stage to address the convention and express gratitude for his resilience in the face of the recent incident.
Reflecting on Saturday’s events, Sean O’Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, lauded Trump’s toughness, eliciting a rousing response from the crowd.
Trump is scheduled to formally accept the Republican nomination on Thursday as he prepares to challenge President Joe Biden in the upcoming November 5 election.
