The National Treasury’s move to reduce the funding of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) by R13 billion is being characterized as an assault on economically disadvantaged students aspiring to pursue further education.
The Higher Education Department recently disclosed the Treasury’s decision, causing widespread concern among thousands who fear they may not receive the necessary funds for their studies in the upcoming year.
NSFAS has faced scrutiny for issues of maladministration and difficulties in managing its financial resources effectively.
The South African Union of Students has criticized the budget cut, considering it counterproductive. A spokesperson for the union, Asive Dlanjwa, remarked, “You would have thought that, at the very least, among all their measures, they would increase and not decrease spending on higher education so that we address issues of employability and unemployment.”
