The ANC in Mpumalanga faces a setback as the recently established Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party reveals that Andries Gamede, a former influential figure within the ruling party in the province, will now serve as one of its provincial co-ordinators. Gamede has previously occupied key roles within the ANC in the province and government.
Having served as the former mayor of both Mkhondo and the Gert Sibande District Municipality, Andries Gamede wields significant influence in Mpumalanga, particularly within the prominent Gert Sibande region. His impact was notably felt when he played a pivotal role in the ANC’s loss of influential positions in the Piet Retief Local Municipality, marking a historic shift since the inception of democracy.
Gamede, known for founding the Independent Community Movement Association, a civic organization that presented independent candidates in the previous local elections, has now aligned himself with the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. As confirmed by MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela, Gamede’s extensive political experience is seen as a valuable asset in the pursuit of the organization’s goal to secure a two-thirds majority in the upcoming general elections.
Ndlela stated, “Yes, Gamede has indeed joined the MK, and he was deployed by the national leadership structures.”
Nhlamulo Ndlela expressed confidence that Andries Gamede’s extensive political expertise would play a crucial role in securing success for the MK party in the entire province. According to Ndlela, the party is optimistic about winning the elections, asserting that a growing awareness among the populace indicates a realization that previous promises were merely unattainable dreams. In his view, the MK party is positioned as the singular solution for South Africans.
When reached for comment, Gamede neither confirmed nor denied his affiliation with former president Jacob Zuma. Instead, he hinted at an impending press conference later in the week, where all details would be disclosed.
Gamede’s decision to join the MK party aligns with the recent announcement by Andile Mngxitama, leader of Black First Land First (BLF), and members of his organization, expressing their intention to support the MK party in the upcoming elections. This move follows a broader trend, with the African Congress for Transformation (ACT), the All African Alliance Movement (AAAM), and the PAC also aligning themselves with MK.
Mngxitama’s alignment with Zuma is in line with his consistent support for the former president’s Radical Economic Transformation (RET) agenda. Mngxitama emphasized a perceived reconfiguration of politics, highlighting the need for organized left-wing movements to champion Radical Economic Transformation, given the organization of the right wing.
