Curfew imposed in Jos North as residents protest deadly violence in Christian community
At least 30 people have been killed after gunmen launched a deadly attack during Palm Sunday celebrations in Ungwan Rukuba, a community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assault took place in Jos, where armed attackers targeted residents in the largely Christian community, triggering outrage and fear across the region. In response, authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew in parts of northern Jos in an effort to restore order and prevent further violence.
Despite the restrictions, residents including groups of young people were seen taking to the streets in protest, blocking roads and demanding greater security following the killings.
The Nigeria government has faced increasing pressure to address persistent violence in central regions of the country, where communities have frequently been affected by armed attacks and kidnappings.
In recent years, several incidents involving attacks on Christian communities, churches, and schools have drawn international attention. In response to concerns over religious violence, Donald Trump previously redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, citing reports that Christians were being targeted and that authorities were failing to provide adequate protection.
Human rights groups have also highlighted the growing insecurity in parts of central and northern Nigeria, where communal tensions, armed groups, and criminal networks continue to threaten civilian populations.
Security forces remain on high alert as the curfew continues, while local authorities urge calm and promise investigations into the deadly attack that has left the community in mourning.
