Doctors treating Pope Leo XIV have confirmed that tissue removed during his recent lung surgery was cancerous, but the disease was confined to the lung and had not spread. His medical team says no further treatment is needed.
The update was provided by Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora following the operation, which lasted approximately 90 minutes.
The Pope had revealed during last Sunday’s Angelus prayer that doctors had discovered a small growth in his right lung before he underwent surgery on Monday.
