Nicholas Kirton played a crucial role in rescuing Canada from a collapse against Ireland, but the non-Test nation still ended up being restricted to a total of 137-7 in their T20 World Cup match in New York on Friday. Canada found themselves in trouble at 53-4 within the first nine overs after losing the toss.

Despite the challenging situation, none of the dismissals could be attributed to the controversial pitch that had been criticized for uneven bounce in previous games, including Ireland’s loss to India at the specially built venue. Kirton, a Barbados-born left-hander, formed a vital partnership of 75 runs in 10 overs with Shreyas Movva, who scored 37 runs. This partnership helped Canada reach 128-5.

Kirton was particularly impressive, scoring 49 off 35 balls, including 16 runs in a single over from paceman Craig Young, highlighted by two straight sixes. However, Kirton narrowly missed out on a half-century when a short-pitched delivery from Barry McCarthy hit his gloves and looped to short fine leg. McCarthy stood out in Ireland’s bowling attack, finishing with figures of 2-24 from his four overs.

Canada, like Ireland, aimed to recover from an opening Group A defeat, following a seven-wicket loss to the United States, who also unexpectedly defeated Pakistan on Thursday.
