The U.S federal government is stepping up enforcement against alleged illegal voting and fraudulent voter registration ahead of the 2026 midterms, with the Department of Justice announcing charges against 63 individuals in connection with election-related offences.

The Department of Homeland Security also announced arrests involving individuals from the Philippines, Italy, Finland, Algeria and Iraq over alleged illegal voting. Meanwhile, legal battles are intensifying over federal efforts to investigate suspected noncitizen voting, with disputes reaching the courts.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has issued a blunt warning: those who vote illegally will face prosecution. The administration says American elections must be decided by eligible American citizens.

With control of Congress at stake, election integrity is emerging as a major battleground in the fight over the future of American democracy.
