Eskom warned on Wednesday that future power plant problems could result in greater load shedding.
Load shedding in Stage 2 has been extended till Friday AM.
At the Medupi, Matla, Kendal, and Komati power plants, generation units failed overnight.
The supply of 240 megawatts from Mozambique has also been affected, contributing to the electrical supply shortages, according to Eskom.
According to CEO André de Ruyter, the outages have forced load shedding until at least Friday AM.
“Of course, that risk exists depending on how the situation evolves, with units returning to service following unscheduled trips or perhaps breaking down again.”
Eskom will not apply power shedding in eThekwini since it is aiding flood-affected areas in KwaZulu-Natal.
