Leadership Changes Could Prompt Wider Government Reorganisation
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that he could reshuffle his government following the resignation of CDU parliamentary leader Jens Spahn, as the ruling conservatives seek to stabilise their leadership ahead of key regional elections.
Merz said he wants a successor to lead the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag by the end of July, while emphasising that no final decision has yet been made.
Thorsten Frei, who currently serves as Head of the Federal Chancellery, is widely regarded as the leading candidate to replace Spahn. If appointed, the move could trigger a broader cabinet reshuffle, requiring Merz to nominate a new Chancellery chief to oversee government coordination.
The anticipated leadership changes come as Germany’s governing coalition prepares for upcoming regional elections and seeks to maintain political stability.
