Italy has withdrawn its remaining troops from IRAQ, bringing an end to its 12-YEAR MILITARY PRESENCE in the country.

Italian forces participated in the U.S.-LED OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE AGAINST ISIS and the NATO MISSION IRAQ, primarily training and strengthening Iraqi security forces.

Defence Minister GUIDO CROSETTO says the withdrawal marks a new phase, with Iraqi forces taking greater responsibility for national security.

Italy will continue supporting Iraq through TRAINING, EXPERTISE AND CAPACITY-BUILDING, while two Italian Carabinieri officers remain under a separate EU ADVISORY MISSION.
