Almost eight years after Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa’s murder, the men charged with his assassination will stand trial.

The trial is scheduled to begin Monday morning in the Pretoria High Court, with five men due in the dock.

In 2014, the football legend was assassinated at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo.

Muzikawukhelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Ntanzi will all stand trial for Meyiwa’s murder on Wednesday.

They face murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition possession charges.

During the most recent court appearance, the presiding judge expressed concern about the defense team’s readiness following the accused’s appointment of new attorneys.

However, the court has been told by that legal team that it is prepared for trial.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, 7 April 2022, Sibiya was sentenced to 12 years in prison for an unrelated attempted murder case.
