More Than 300 Quakes Recorded In A Single Day – Natural Or Induced?

More than 300 earthquakes have been recorded worldwide in a 24-hour period, raising questions about whether the recent level of seismic activity is simply part of Earth’s natural fluctuations or whether they’re induced.

The USGS says temporary increases or decreases in global earthquake activity are part of normal seismic variability and do not, by themselves, indicate that a major earthquake is imminent. Earthquakes naturally occur as tectonic stresses build and faults suddenly slip.

But there is another side to the story: Earthquakes can be induced by human activity. Deep underground fluid injection, particularly wastewater disposal linked to oil and gas operations, has been documented as a cause of induced earthquakes in certain regions.

So, what is driving the current activity?Normal geological processes, aftershocks and earthquake swarms, or localised human-induced seismicity?
