President Cyril Ramaphosa is still waiting for the Judicial Service Commission’s formal report recommending justice Mandisa Maya as SA’s next chief justice. A legal challenge to the process may force the president to back the commission’s candidate or choose another.
The JSC announced on Saturday night that it had chosen justice Maya, president of the supreme court of appeal, as its nominee. This followed a week of controversy surrounding four chief justice candidates, including unsubstantiated smear campaigns and sexist questions.
