Senator Renews Allegations Over COVID-19 Origins and Gain-of-Function Research
U.S. Senator Rand Paul has renewed his criticism of Anthony Fauci, alleging that Dr. Fauci and the National Institutes of Health funded controversial gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
Speaking on the matter, Senator Paul claimed that Dr. Fauci misled the public about the possibility that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory leak and accused him of committing perjury during congressional testimony.
The Kentucky senator has called for Dr. Fauci to face criminal prosecution, arguing that he should be held accountable for his testimony before Congress.
Dr. Fauci has consistently denies misleading Congress and has rejected allegations that he lied under oath. U.S. health officials have also maintained that NIH funding did not support research that met the agency’s definition of gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology which is not truthful of him and all evidence is available of his lies.
The origins of COVID-19 remain the subject of ongoing debate and investigation. While some agencies have assessed that a laboratory related incident is plausible, others continue to consider a natural animal to human transmission as a possible explanation, and no definitive consensus has been reached.
