At least three people have been killed and more than a dozen injured following a large-scale overnight drone and missile attack launched by Russian forces across multiple regions of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
The coordinated assault struck several cities in the early hours of Tuesday, triggering nationwide air raid alerts and causing widespread damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.
Civilian Areas Hit in Zaporizhzhia and Poltava
In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed and at least five others were injured after drones and missiles hit residential neighborhoods, local authorities said. The attack damaged multiple apartment buildings, private homes, and commercial properties, while emergency crews battled fires sparked by the strikes.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Poltava region, two people were killed and at least 11 others were injured. Officials reported damage to residential buildings and a hotel, underscoring the continued vulnerability of civilian infrastructure in the ongoing conflict.
Part of Broader Escalation
The latest strikes come amid warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said intelligence indicated Russia was preparing a new wave of large-scale attacks.
Tuesday’s assault appears to confirm those warnings and reflects an escalation in Russia’s use of combined drone and missile tactics aimed at overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses.
Military analysts note that such attacks have become a recurring feature of the war, often targeting energy systems and urban centers, particularly during nighttime operations.
Widespread Damage and Emergency Response
Authorities reported that the strikes caused fires and structural damage across multiple sites, including industrial facilities and non-residential buildings. Emergency services were deployed overnight to extinguish flames and search for survivors trapped under debris.
Images shared by regional officials showed high-rise buildings engulfed in flames and firefighters working through the night to contain the destruction.
Ongoing War and Rising Tensions
The attack is the latest in a series of intensified aerial assaults exchanged between Russia and Ukraine, as the war now in its fourth year continues to escalate. Recent days have seen large-scale drone strikes by both sides targeting critical infrastructure deep behind front lines.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for increased international military support, particularly advanced air defense systems, to counter the growing threat posed by drones and missile barrages.
Outlook
With intelligence warnings of further attacks and continued military activity on both sides, officials caution that civilian areas remain at high risk. Air raid sirens continue to sound regularly across the country, as authorities urge residents to remain vigilant.
The situation remains fluid, and casualty figures may rise as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available.
