South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison after a magistrate’s court found him guilty of firing a rifle into the air during a rally. Malema, 45, one of South Africa’s most prominent political figures, was convicted last year on five charges related to the 2018 incident at a stadium in the Eastern Cape Province. These charges include unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public space.
