Tanzania Unveils $3b Hydropower Giant, Doubling Power Capacity

Tanzania has officially inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, its largest hydropower station and a major leap in the country’s energy ambitions.

Built along the Rufiji River, the $3 billion facility features nine turbines capable of generating more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity, nearly doubling Tanzania’s generating capacity.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan commissioned the project, which officials say could help curb persistent power shortages and reduce average electricity costs by around 30%.

With greater and more reliable power for businesses and industry, the government expects the project to attract investment, create jobs and propel Tanzania toward becoming a regional electricity exporter rather than an energy importer.
