The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng is planned to stage a protest on Wednesday outside the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria to protest the release of Chris Hani’s assassin, Janusz Walus.

Wednesday has been designated as Chris Hani Day of Action by the party and its alliance partners, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

On Tuesday, Walus was transported to the prison’s hospital wing after being stabbed by an inmate from his housing unit.

The incident occurred just two days before his parole hearing.

According to the correctional services center, he is stable and receiving the appropriate medical attention.

Walus had been imprisoned for over three decades when he was sentenced to life in prison in 1993.
The ANC, SACP, and Cosatu have all expressed dissatisfaction with the Constitutional Court’s decision to award Walus parole.

The ANC contended that Walus should not be released because his murder of Hani nearly caused a civil war in South Africa.
